I am glad to see this blog up and running and I delighted to start the commenting.

Underlying the work of the social justice committee is the question each of us is asking and maybe even struggling with...what is social justice?...for whom?...how does it work?...how do we create it?...and how does it feel?

I hope we will be able to collect and share this conversation with others including of course members of the congregation.

I am just going to start in.

WHAT IS SOCIAL JUSTICE?

A living experience of life in which the value of my life and my chances for a good quality of life are roughly equal to others in the world.

Social justice is not a static index but a dynamic quality that grows and changes as human life grows and changes and new challenges in the human condition emerge. Social justice cannot be achieved as such but is an aspiration that guides conduct so that the possibility of achieving it remains within a human horizon.

I would say that social justice in fact is not grounded in human experience only but is an aspiration central to every individual life regardless of its form. That is it is central to the survival instinct of every life.
